Back to school
Sometimes you get what you need, when you're not looking for it. A parent teacher meeting turned into a new business client when my child gave my business card to the teacher we were talking to. Not only was the teacher excited to hear of my new venture, but immediately told me they had two guitars in need of immediate work.
So all this week, on Instagram, you've seen me working on the green guitar above. A new nut, cleaning and oiling the fretboard and bridge, new bridge pins, a fret polish, new strings and a set up.
As a school guitar, it's life has been hard and not only had it been left in a cupboard with no strings, it had a nasty hole punched in the side.
The sides are laminated rather than solid wood and trying to patch the hole would be difficult to colour match as well, so instead I decided to expand the hole into a functional sound port, this allows the player to hear themselves better and can make a difference to the overall tone of the guitar.
Mainly I wanted to make the damage look like an intentional design choice.
A little beveling of the edges and some black marker, and I think it's a big improvement on the original jagged damage.
The music teachers at the school were really happy with the work and I'm looking forward to future work from them and other people they know.
