Firstly the Höfner went back to it's owner, who was very happy with the restoration, I left the 'address label' from his childhood inside the body, whilst replacing the machine heads and strap peg, so now he has a better version of his memory to start playing again.
The missed opportunity was an Epiphone Les Paul. A client called and said an accident had happened and could I take a look at the guitar. When I got there the guitar was in two large pieces with three or more small shards of neck still on hand. Apparently a non-musician had decided to look cool with the lovely guitar and then accidentally demonstrated the flaw in all Les Pauls, the headstock is a weak point and is easily snapped off the neck!
Thankfully the break was quite long and very clean, so would glue back well and with the few shards, there would not be too much filling to do afterwards. Finally the guitar is finished in gloss black so easy to match. I was confident an "invisible" mend was possible. Sadly, on Monday morning the client asked me to return the damaged guitar as the circumstances had changed, and replacement had been chosen rather than repair. Both the client and I were sorry to hear this and I still hold out hope that the broken guitar will come back to me for repair in the next week or two.
