We have the tools!
Spring has sprung. You can tell it’s raining every other day in Wellington!
With Spring we think about growth and new life and so it’s great to have new students coming to the luthiery class. As we head into September I’ve added the next two class dates, 7th and 14th, then a break as I’ll be working at the Ngaio Repair Cafe hopefully repairing guitars and ukulele, but probably mending chairs as per usual.
I was talking to a friend today, a photographer, about how sometimes technical skills are transferable, but not the experience. He gave the example of taking portrait photographs of people compared to still life pictures of apples. It’s the same technical process, but if you're not a portrait photographer, then your experience with apples is going to produce a pretty poor result. In my case Someone suggested I could offer violin set up and maintenance. On the surface it ought to be a similar process, it’s all about string spacing and distances from a finger board, but dive a little deeper and I’m going to be spending many hours and probably money building up the experience needed to work on anything but the most basic of instruments in the viol family!
A new instrument to learn new skills on
